
Kubernetes is no longer just a Silicon Valley buzzword – it’s powering mission-critical systems across industries. In fact, nearly 43% of enterprises use Kubernetes for IoT deployments (with another 31% planning to adopt it). From Bose’s 3-million-device streaming platform to smart-home providers handling millions of messages with sub-200ms latency, Kubernetes has proven it can deliver serious scale and reliability in IoT and telematics.
Over the past year, Navixy decided it was time to join these ranks. We’ve undertaken a major transformation: moving our telematics cloud from static servers to a Kubernetes-powered, containerized architecture. It’s been a logical evolution to ensure unlimited scalability and stability as we grow. Today we’d like to share what changed, why we did it, and how it benefits our partners, developers, and team.
Why Kubernetes, and why now? Simply put, we’re gearing up for the future. Navixy’s platform handles real-time GPS tracking, IoT sensor data, and fleet management apps – hundreds of thousands of devices streaming data in parallel. We need to process that data on the fly, 24/7, across the globe. Kubernetes gives us the flexibility to meet these needs by orchestrating our dozens of microservices on-demand. Our system can now adjust dynamically to shifting loads, whether it’s an influx of new devices coming online or periodic bursts of data from the field. In IT, nothing stands still; this move ensures we won’t hit infrastructure limits as our customer base expands.
In a nutshell, here’s what Kubernetes brings to Navixy:
It’s been about five years since our last deep dive into Navixy’s infrastructure, and a lot has happened. The biggest shift, of course, is migrating to Kubernetes. We’ve broken our once-monolithic platform into microservices and run them in containers, orchestrated by Kubernetes across a distributed cloud. Concretely, Kubernetes now manages everything from data ingestion services to APIs and business logic modules – all the moving parts under the hood. This cloud-native approach immediately paid off in performance and resilience: Kubernetes detects and auto-recovers from failures, so a hiccup in one component no longer causes an outage. Deployments that used to be risky and slow are now routine – releases are smoother and rollbacks are as simple as restarting a container. In short, Navixy’s platform became more modular, agile, and robust.
Even though our customers and partners don’t see Kubernetes directly, they feel the difference in day-to-day service. Here’s how:
For a telematics SaaS serving a global audience, these improvements are game-changers. A fleet management app in North America and an IoT sensor network in Europe both enjoy low-latency, reliable service because behind the scenes our infrastructure can expand, contract, and heal itself as needed. And importantly, all these changes come without increasing complexity for our users – it’s all under the hood, quietly making things better.
So, how did we actually pull this off? Here’s a peek behind the scenes at our Kubernetes migration journey. Spoiler: it involved a lot of planning, a few sleepless nights, and a DevOps team that doesn’t believe in cutting corners.
About three years ago, we decided it was time to rethink how our infrastructure was set up. Everything was working fine, but we had bigger goals – we wanted to be more flexible, respond faster to change, and eliminate any scaling bottlenecks that could hold us back. We already had Kubernetes on our roadmap (it’d been sitting in our backlog itching for attention), and this was the perfect moment to act on it. After all, what’s more rewarding for a DevOps team than going full Infrastructure-as-Code and modernizing the stack, right? 😁
We knew that jumping to Kubernetes would only succeed if our processes got a makeover too. So first, we overhauled how we deliver software. Now, the entire configuration of our platform – from service code to Kubernetes manifests – lives in a Git repository, serving as a single source of truth. Whenever a developer or DevOps engineer pushes a change, automated CI/CD pipelines kick in to build, test, and deploy it across our environments. In practice, every Navixy service is built not just as a binary, but as a container image. This means what runs on a developer’s machine is exactly what runs in production (no more “works on my machine” woes). We’ve embraced GitOps deployment models fully: using tools like Argo CD, our clusters continuously reconcile to the declared state in Git. If that sounds fancy, think of it this way – any change, whether code or config, is applied through version-controlled commits, and Kubernetes just makes it so. This gives us massive transparency and control. We can trace which version of a service is running where, and if something goes wrong, rolling back is as easy as reverting a Git commit. Our pipeline has truly become an internal developer platform for Navixy engineers, automating everything from builds to infrastructure updates. It’s modern, modular, and transparent – letting our team focus on features instead of fiddling with servers.

One huge win from this new approach was the ability to release a containerized On-Premise edition of Navixy alongside our cloud SaaS. In fact, that was one of the first big outcomes of “Step 1.” By containerizing our entire stack, we made it straightforward to package Navixy for customers who want to run it in their own environment. There’s now an Easy Installation script (literally called Easy installation) that deploys Navixy on a client’s servers via Docker/Kubernetes – no deep Linux expertise needed. This is a big deal for channel partners serving government or enterprise clients with strict data residency needs. Few SaaS telematics providers offer this kind of flexibility, but Navixy’s investment in DevOps made it possible to maintain one codebase that can run on our multi-tenant cloud or in a customer’s private cloud. In short, our internal improvements translated into a better product for certain customers as well, giving them a portable, self-hosted Navixy option without extra hassle.
The next piece of our transformation was adopting Apache Kafka as the heart of our data pipeline. While not strictly required by Kubernetes, Kafka became a key part of our new architecture to handle the growth in data streams. Now, all our heavy data flows pass through a high-throughput Kafka cluster in each region. Why? Imagine hundreds of thousands of GPS trackers all reconnecting after a network outage – that’s a massive burst of data suddenly hitting the system. In the past we managed spikes with ad-hoc caching or manual scaling. Now Kafka acts as a giant buffer that smooths out traffic spikes by queueing device data and feeding it to our microservices at a steady rate. The platform stays calm and responsive even during “storms” of incoming messages. We like to call Kafka our “air traffic controller” – it makes sure no data gets lost and no service gets overwhelmed. This addition improved resilience and decoupled our services nicely (producers and consumers of data are now buffered by Kafka). As a bonus, it’s setting the stage for new analytics features we’re working on, since having a central event stream opens up a lot of possibilities. Once again, it’s an example of adopting proven industry tech to make Navixy stronger.
With groundwork laid, we tackled the core migration – moving all our services into Kubernetes with zero downtime. Our DevOps/SRE team lives by one motto: “don’t break what works.” That meant we approached this migration very carefully and methodically. We didn’t just flip a switch one day. Instead, we incrementally moved components into Kubernetes, testing as we went, over the course of about 1.5 years. For a while we ran hybrid, with some parts in classic VMs and others in K8s, gradually shifting the balance. We constantly asked ourselves “how can we do this without any customer noticing?” and set up plenty of guardrails and monitoring (more on observability soon!) to be sure we weren’t introducing regressions. The final cutover to fully Kubernetes happened early in 2025, and I’m happy to report we completed the entire transition with zero service interruption. For a 24/7 platform that’s ingesting data every second, that’s no small feat – and I couldn’t be prouder of our team for pulling it off. 💪 We essentially rebuilt Navixy’s airplane while it was flying, and not a single passenger felt a bump. (If it sounds like we’re excited about this, it’s because we are!)
Throughout this journey, we also upgraded our observability tooling to keep a close eye on everything. We instrumented the new platform with Prometheus for metrics, Graylog/ELK for logs, and Grafana dashboards to visualize it all. This wasn’t just for after-the-fact monitoring – we bake observability into our development and deployment process. In true “shift-left” fashion, our engineers use these tools in staging and testing to catch issues early, not just in production. Every code change’s impact can be observed via metrics and logs almost immediately, closing the feedback loop for continuous improvement. If something is off, we’ll know before it ever affects a customer. In practice, this means fewer 3 AM surprises and more confidence in each release. (Our on-call team definitely appreciates that.)
Now that the dust has settled, what’s the end result? In a word, “bliss.” One of our engineers jokingly described the new Kubernetes-based platform as “pure bliss… the elegance and control we’ve been chasing”. Things that used to be hard are so much easier now. Let me highlight a few outcomes and why they matter:
Importantly, these gains weren’t made by throwing a massive increase in manpower at the problem. Navixy is still a relatively small, smart team (~100 professionals) who wear multiple hats. We don’t have the luxury of hundreds of engineers, but with the right automation and DevOps culture, we don’t need that many. This whole Kubernetes project has been a labor of love for our DevOps and engineering team, and it shows what a nimble crew can accomplish. (I like to think we punch above our weight! 🥊) In fact, our experience mirrors broader industry trends: a well-known case study noted that Bose’s IoT platform handled 30,000 deployments per year across dozens of microservices with about 100 engineers, thanks to Kubernetes and automation. We see the same principle at work here – with GitOps, CI/CD, and Kubernetes, a lean team can manage a large-scale, globally distributed infrastructure without breaking a sweat. It’s all about working smarter, leveraging software and cloud tooling to amplify what our people can do. The enthusiasm and precision our team brought to this project made all the difference.
Finally, what does all this mean for you – our partners, developers, and customers? In practical terms, Navixy is now a more developer-friendly platform than ever. If you’re building telematics solutions on our APIs or integrating devices, you can be confident the backend is modern and scalable. We’re able to deliver new features and improvements to you faster, with less risk. And if you ever have unique deployment needs (say, an on-premise install for a sensitive project), our containerized approach has you covered. The Navixy platform can run in our cloud or yours with equal ease, which opens up possibilities for collaboration and custom solutions. We’ve had channel partners already take advantage of our Dockerized on-prem edition to serve clients who require strict data residency – something that simply wasn’t feasible before. In short, the platform is more flexible for everyone involved.
As we wrap up this journey, it’s clear that adopting Kubernetes was more than just a technical upgrade – it was a strategic move towards a more modular, scalable, and agile Navixy. We modernized our architecture and processes hand-in-hand, from continuous integration pipelines to observability and everything in between. The payoff is a platform that’s ready for the future of telematics, backed by a team excited to keep pushing the envelope.
